Salt-Fog and Salt Spray Testing
Any product, materials or system component that is exposed to the elements must be able to withstand corrosion. Demonstrating adequate resistance to salt spray and fog is important, not just for the sake of regulatory compliance but also to deliver an overall higher quality of product to your end users or other stakeholders.
Salt-fog and salt spray testing is conducted to determine the effectiveness of protective coatings and finishes on materials, as well as the effects of salt deposits on the physical and electrical aspects of a product. NTS can conduct your corrosion testing to meet the requirements of various regulatory standards as well as customized testing programs. We have the chambers, support equipment and the technical expertise to ensure the proper application of testing requirements to your product in a professional laboratory environment.
Salt Spray Testing at NTS
Accurately recreating the conditions a product or component faces in poor weather is one of the key goals of salt spray and fog testing. Doing so in a controlled environment allows our engineers to measure with precision and certainty the effect these conditions have on the materials being tested. Then, we can isolate problem areas and make more effective recommendations for improving your product.
To do this, NTS testing labs employ a sealed salt spray chamber in which your component is subjected to controlled doses of an atomized sodium chloride solution. The length of exposure and the strength of the solution are determined by your specific project requirements. Following the test, we use state-of-the-art data acquisition and analysis tools to evaluate the overall corrosion resistance of your product at the microscopic level.
Who We Serve
Salt spray testing is an important part of compliance with a wide range of regulatory standards, one of the most common of which is ISO 9227:2012 — Corrosion Tests in Artificial Atmospheres. To maintain compliance with ISO 9227:2012, materials should be subjected to 720 hours of continuous exposure to a 5% salt solution.
Salt fog testing is a requirement in several different industries, including defense, aerospace, automotive, power generation, telecommunications and more. Many of these industries have their own specific regulatory standards that must be met, such as MIL-STD-1312-01 and NASM 1312-1.
In addition to servicing various large systems, NTS also performs salt-fog, salt spray and cyclic corrosion testing on smaller parts as well, using compact equipment more suitable to the testing at hand. We have tested everything from military hardware, telecommunications gear, automotive parts, consumer electronics, power generators and various other items that must resist corrosion in severe operating environments.
Our Facilities
NTS maintains a network of salt spray chambers and testing labs across the country. Our facilities are ISO/IEC 17025-accredited by the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA), which means we can perform testing and certification to a wide range of specifications. Our in-house engineers can devise a comprehensive program of environmental testing that includes salt-fog and other factors. We are able to quickly turn around projects of nearly any size, whether your goal is quality assurance or compliance management.
