Lightning Protection of Aircraft
Spring 2023 Lightning Training Schedules:
Lightning Protection of Aircraft: February 27 – March 3, 2023
Lightning Protection of Avionics: March 6 – 10, 2023
Each course will be presented virtually via Microsoft Teams.
These four and one-half day courses have been presented in person at Lightning Technologies in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, since 1984. They will be continued virtually until further notice, when they will be resumed in person.
Lightning Protection of Aircraft is a four-and-one-half day course to familiarize aircraft and system or equipment design engineers with the interaction of lightning and static electricity with advanced technology aircraft. The course begins by bringing the student up to date with the fundamentals of lightning and static electrification of aircraft and their effects on structures and systems. This is followed by a thorough review of applicable regulations and standards. Students will learn the basic approaches and techniques of protection design and certification for both new aircraft and for modifications and upgrades. Emphasis is placed on the efficient preparation of certification and verification test plans. This course has been designed to give students the practical information and basic understanding required for meaningful work in this technology and to avoid common pitfalls such as misinterpretation of requirements and costly overdesigns. The course has been developed by engineers currently active in the lightning protection design and certification of the world’s most advanced aerospace vehicles and systems. This is a more general course.
Requirements: Students should be conversant with aircraft or system installation designs and should be actively engaged in the planning, design or certification of aircraft or systems.
Students Receive: A hard copy of Edition 3 of our 500-page textbook Lightning Protection of Aircraft and the Course Notebook. The course Lightning Protection of Aircraft covers the first 8 chapters and an introduction of later chapters. After a brief review of the natural lightning environment, Lightning Protection of Avionics covers Chapters 9 through 18 of the newly published textbook.
Lead Instructor: Andy Plumer, Chief Engineer of NTS Pittsfield, a widely recognized authority in this technology area.
Cost: $2,500 per course
